Description

The Egypt 1 site is located in the Sahara Desert near a Libyan Pseudo Invariant Calibration Site (PICS). This site shows good spatial and temporal stability (within 3 percent in relative scale) and is one of the 20 sites selected from the Saharan and Arabian desert regions by Cosnefroy et al. (1996) for satellite sensor calibration based on the longstanding spatial uniformity criterion.[1]. According to the study, this site showed very little monthly average precipitation, minimal cloud coverage and moderate seasonal variations.

Usability

Egypt 1 has been used for different purposes by calibration groups over the past few years. It has been used by the USGS and its partner, South Dakota State University (SDSU) for radiometric characterization of Landsat Collection 1 products [2] as well as for Landsat absolute radiometric calibration analysis [3].  Egypt 1 is also used for cross- calibration of Landsat with other satellite sensors (e.g. MODIS) [4] and for long term stability monitoring of different satellite sensors [5].  Closest AERONET station:  El_Farafra [ 27.06, 27.99], 187.5 km
