Description

The La Crau site is about 50 kilometers (km) northwest of Marseille, France off the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. This is one of eight instrumented sites that are Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) reference test sites.  The area has a dry and sunny Mediterranean climate. The soil is composed of pebbles and is sparsely covered by a low vegetation [1]. Overall, the area near the site is relatively homogeneous, but imagery may be saturated due to the  possibility of atmospheric water vapor and aerosol problems.

Usability

La Crau has been used for vicarious and absolute calibration of different satellite sensors such as Sentinel-2/MSI, along with its on-board calibrator [1], and Landsat 8 OLI. La Crau has also been used for longstanding calibration analysis by the Satellite Pour l’Observation de la Terre–Végétation (SPOT) cameras. The site has been analyzed in vicarious calibration and validation by the Modular Optoelectronic Multispectral Scanner (MOMS)-2P-camera onboard the Russian Mir space station and by the High-Resolution Visible (HRV) cameras on the SPOT satellites and Sentinel-2 [2].
