Description

The Libya 3 site is located within the Sahara Desert in Africa. As a desert site, less spatial and temporal variation is expected, minimal cloud coverage is observed, and changes caused by human activity are negligible. The spatial homogeneity of Libya 3 for a 100 x 100 kilometer (km) area has been characterized by Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) measurements [1]. In the observation, it was found that for the Red and NIR spectral bands, the standard deviation from mean TOA reflectance was 3.8 percent and 4.7 percent for the Blue band. These values are slightly higher than the threshold (3 percent) set for site selection as defined by Cosnefroy et al. (1996) [2].

Usability

Libya 3 has been considered for long-term sensor performance monitoring because of its stability. The site has also been used in the cross-calibration of medium-resolution sensors such as MERIS, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Polarization and Anisotropy of Reflectances for Atmospheric Science coupled with Observations from a Lidar (PARASOL) [1].
