The recent CEOS publication, “Satellites, Science and Society,” discusses the CEOS vision to bring together science and Earth observation technology to benefit our society and introduces the major activities of CEOS space agencies contributing to the Group on Earth Observations (GEO)/Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). The USGS participated in developing the content for this document and were major contributors to many of the tasks in the document. Examples of the tasks include CEOS Contribution to the GEO Forest Carbon Tracking Task, CEOS Working Group on Climate and Agency Activities on Climate, Promoting Data Democracy Worldwide, GEOSS, Quality Assurance Strategy, Coordinating CEOS Contributions to GEOSS in Education, Training, Capacity Building for Satellite Remote Sensing Applications, Facilitating Access to Space Data, CEOS Virtual Constellations for GEO, CEOS Activities in Support of Disaster Management, and Global Digital Elevation Model (DEM) Assessment. This document was published in October 2010 under the joint coordination of Geoinformatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and can be seen at: http://www.ceos.org/images/CEOS-SatellitesScienceAndSociety-FullVersion.pdf.
